--30h and 253 Daimler Ambulance (1950-64)

Discussion transfered from "New arrivals".

Just added a better replacement for my 30hm/624 Daimler Military Ambulance.

Considering selling the one I had, I discovered that the base plates are different. The new arrival is the older version, with ridged base plate and small lettering, whereas the one present is the post 1954 renumbered version. So this presents a dilemma, because I just intended to improve, not to keep the poorer old one, but they ARE different ... A luxury problem !

Kind regards,

Jan

Jan,

Now that you have the base plates type 1 and 3, you must search for the type 2 with large letters and without the ref number 253.

Hi Jacques, for this model my priorities are rather modest, just one beautiful example would be enough for me. You know that regarding the 555/955 my priorities in this respect are rather extreme.
Nevertheless, you may warn me if you see a Daimler Military Ambulance with the reference number 624 embossed in the base plate. I will accept such a version to enter my collection

Kind regards,

Jan

Dear Jan,

I thought about mentioning the base plate with 624 but I do not think that there was any made. None of the export models have a specific base plate.

A question is : was the plate with 253 embosed made before or after the plate without reference ?

Here is the other type of baseplate:

I have four Military and three Civilian Daimler ambulances and none of them contain a reference number. Does this imply that the one with a reference is the rarest version ?

'624' does not exist as far as I know, and both my cream/boxed and white/windows civilian Daimler have the reference number '253' embossed, so the version without must be intermediary, ca. 1952/53, I presume.

Kind regards,

Jan

Of course, there are casting variations, if there were not any, it would not be a Dinky Toys from Liverpool. These variations are not obvious, they are inside. The arrows A and C show chanels which have been added, D has been enlarged. B has also been added but in two stages :
1) as seen on the picture, the shape is a V
2) the shape is square.

My 30hm with baseplate with large letters and no 253 does not have this variation so it must have been added at a late stage. All these chanels have been added to improve the flow of metal in an aging die, not as reinforcements as one reads often. The Dinky are strong enough without there, specially the vans.

Both my civilian and military ambulances with 253 embossed in the base plate have the second type square flow channel.

Any more variations ?

Jacques.

In this respect I would also like to remind you of the assumed similar zamak flow adaptions on the casting of the Fire Engine 555/955:

It is discussed in the respective thread:
http://dtcawebsite.org/index.php?option=com_kunena&Itemid=28&func=view&i...

I would hope that some more about changes of the 555/955 die could be discovered.

(Sorry to get a little bit off-topic)

Kind regards, Jan

Jan - I support Richard - and many other silent collectors - keep it!! I have lost count the number of times I have procured a better example of an existing model only to discover the so-called "replacement" model has some differences requiring it to be kept also! I think this happens to most ardent collectors!

The latest to fall into this category for me is the 965 Terex I won from Tennant's recently, subject of a Post in the Christmas Eve thread! (I never noticed the error when bidding, but going back to the photograph that accompanied the auction, it sticks out like the proverbial!!) The "error" of the rear wheels requires it to be kept, although the model it was intended to be replaced has a number of slight paint chips, so both remain bringing my 965 collection of both Euclid and Terex models to 11 different examples!!

Kind regards

Bruce

Thanks for your appreciated advises, Richard and Bruce. I fully understand your considerations. However, I recently discovered that the example to be replaced has a lot of hardly visible touch-ins and I feel a bit cheated by that. Even if not perfect or excellent, I want 'honest' models in the end.
Still, I have over one month to go until the next fair to sell, so time enough to reconsider ...
Kind regards, Jan

That's a bargain Richard. Looking at the very shiny axle ends it seems to be an early one to me. Does it have the early base plate too?

I had some time this afternoon to take some better pictures of my Daimler ambulances than before:
