Contemplating to sell my collection Dinky Toys

Dear members,

I’m contemplating to sell my collection Dinky Toys, some related die cast models and other related material.

The collection can be seen at www.boland-dinkytoys.com

This collection has been built up during my life, so it’ll cost me some emotional effort to part with it.

However, my children are not really interested in the collection and since I’m now still healthy and kicking, why not deal with it myself….

I’m investigating the possibilities e.g. with Vectis, but  I want to offer you a preview. If you are specifically interested in one of my models, make me an offer.

Christiaan,

A difficult decision indeed! But you are fortunate that an auctioneer is even an option for you. i am in California and unaware of any auctioneer or dealer that purchases Dinky collections in the States. The eBay monopoly has killed their business just as, by and large, it has destroyed toy shows and swapmeets here.

I am lucky not to need the money tied up in my Dinky collection of 50 years but i do wonder what my wife and son will do with it. I do not want to give it up but I suppose if I could wave a magic wand and find a good home for it I would. Emotional attachment aside, however, I do not want to spend the next many years packing up boxes for eBay.

Christian---I also sympathize with you on having to make such a difficult and emotional decision. Dinky Toys have been part of my life now for over 65 years, and I cannot imagine parting with them, at least not quite yet. But I also understand your not wanting to burden your family with them down the road, so a difficult decision is yours to ponder. I will be 72 in another month, so my collecting days are starting to wind down some, but I still have items I am looking for. Best of luck to you going forward.....this will not be easy for sure.
Best regards, Terry

Thanks Jonathan and Jerry,

I'll take it step by step and I'm in no hurry, but I would like to control the process myself. As I stopped active collecting some years ago, I know face the fact that assembling a collection is not the same as having a collection. The latter, unless one can really 'do' something with it, is a very static state.....

Not to discourage anyone to have a collection, on the contrary, but for me it is getting too static and 'what about the collection later?'

Keep on collecting guys!

Hello Christiaan and all, there is a well-known Dutch proverb: 't Hebben van de zaak is het eind van het vermaak. I don't know if there is an English equivalent but I might translate it like this: Having acquired a desirable item is the end of the pleasure, or: when you finally have acquired something that you have been chasing for a long time the fun is over. If collecting itself is the main and only pleasure, I agree: what the is the remaining use of HAVING that collection.

In 2007, at the first AGM of the DTCA, I opened our talks session with a little provoking talk and demonstration: Dinky Toys, the favourite collecting hobby?

Mind the word collecting in italics and the question mark! I did not talk about collecting, I talked about AFTER collecting, AFTER having acquired the items you had desired for such a long time. And I can guarantee, the more my Dinky Toys collecting is nearing some kind of completeness and gradually becomes static, the more I enjoy that AFTER collecting phase - with all opportunities and activities involved! And I need that collection to be within reach for these activities, and, consequently, it needs to be carefully maintained with all the challenges and joy involved. So that is my modest attitude and opinion, of course with full respect for others who disagree.

I am determined to keep my collection as long as I live, unless unfortunate circumstances really force something else to happen. My heirs may do with it what they want (except destroying): keep it, donate it, sell it, and perhaps pick out their favourites first, as a souvenir. My very organized collection and its detailed catalogue (and guiding instructions) will be a useful aid for them to decide what to do. Besides, my wife doesn't think of getting rid of it when I appear to be the first to go.

Kind regards, Jan

Dear Jan,

I knew you or someone else would come up with this and I do apologize to all of you for not bringing up the energy to maintain my collection as should befit it.

From my website you can see that I did do a lot .

I also have an inventory-listing in Excel stating for each and every model I collected when I acquired it, from who through what channel, how much I paid, it's page number in books like Edward Force, Sue Richardson, Mike & Sue Richardson and Jean-Michel Roulet.indicating dates of introduction, conversion and deletion.

During my many removals (2000 from The Netherlands to Shanghai, China, in Shanghai 2002 and again 2006) then back to The Netherlands in 2007 and once more in NL 2012, I packed and inventoried the ever growing collection indicting what level in what box they were packed. I've spend many hours on all this, but somehow the fire is extinguishing.....

And I would not like to burden my children with having to clear out what was very dear to me as they know to well, but never caught their interest.

As I stated above, if there are models that rise the interest of fellow members, let me know.

Cheers, Christiaan

Jan---You brought up some very good points, which I also share with you.....namely, the enjoyment of just having these magical toys, even if no new ones are forthcoming. For me, I am fortunate that my now overcrowded display cabinet, is right at hand and readily accessible, to either view or allow models to be removed. Since my computer/desk area is very nearby, for many years now I go over to the cabinet & remove a favorite Dinky, to place alongside my keyboard, so I can gaze at it, pick it up, rotate it around to see all sides, and marvel all over again at the special pleasure it still gives me. So I guess for some of us, there are 2 parts of our Dinky's.....finding and collecting those missing items, and then simply enjoying them for what they are and what they mean to us individually. Kind of like my vintage 1930 Ford Model A Town Sedan. I bought it from a gentleman in New York, who,had spent over 10 years meticulously restoring it. But after he was done, he discovered, that for him, the fun and work of restoring it was everything, and when he was done, he was ready to sell the car.....which was absolutely beautiful and nicely done.......I couldn't imagine parting with it after spending that much time on it, but he had no interest in that, and the car was sitting in storage, and he was most happy that I bought it. Each of us have our own, individual motives and feelings for collecting......part of the fun is knowing and being friends with so many diverse collectors!
Best regards, Terry

Terry, that's indeed part of my hesitation too. Nice contacts with fellow enthousiasts is also a good part of collecting/having a collection. And yes, I've picked a few that I possibly won't sell after all..... Still did not really move anyway though!

Dear co-members of DTCA,

Finally, I've registered, packed and shipped my collection to Vectis in the UK late March 2018. And now they are part of their August 14 auction, under the name “The European Collection”, lots 163 -  477.

Although there are a few mistakes in the descriptions, I’m pretty satisfied with the job they did at Vectis.

For your information, I would like to point out two items, that seem to be under-estimated in the value for certain collectors:

Lot 319: The No.660 Antar tank transporter is (as mentioned) the detachable version, of which I’ve come across only once, this one. (From my website: Very rare variant. This is a late version with windows and a plastic driver. The trailer is detachable and a different casting, being taken from Thorneycroft Mighty Antar with Transformer 908. The connecting pin was never riveted on the trailer, as with 908. This was how it came and it is not damage. The casting differences are cross supports for the transformer and projections underneath for its retaining wires, for use on 908. There are other minor differences.

660-G Thorneycroft Mighty Antar Tank Transporter - detachable

Lot 380: The 152a-G Light Tank of 1938 has rimmed wheels rather than sprocket wheels. On the picture it does not show very well. (From my website: "Supplies of chains must have run out at some time, because some examples have been found with the black rubber wheels of the 35 series". This model has metal hubs, possibly another attempt to cope with missing chains).

In the next pictures (from my website) it is the right-hand side tank.

152a-G Light Tank of 1938 with rimmed wheels

For your information, this are the remarks, I sent to Vectis:

Lotnr

Issue

294

In text: number is (9); Should be (10), counting the ramp No.994 as a model

310

In text: ….and No.675 Scout Car ….;  Should be and No.673 Scout Car

380

tank 152a has hubs in stead of sprocket wheels

383

left-bottom gun is Britains PAK 36 Anti-tank gun

392

21, not 22 models; one piece broken off (050d right side), mistaken for separate model? 050h is only part of a model

449

In description, No. 60m Flying boat is mentioned, should be 63b? 60m is colored version of 60h

455

In text: No.60w Clipper; No.70b Vickers Viking;…. No 60w Clipper, Should be No.62w Imperial Airways Frobisher Class Liner G-AFDI? No.70c Vickers Viking (70b is 'Tempest')

457

in text: No.70 Giant High Speed Monoplane…. Should be 62y-G Giant Higspeed Monoplane G-ATBK

459

What make & model is the sand-colored plane with the clear german crosses?(not 726!)

463

I erroneously made a box-label with 707b (Traffic signal 3-fase) and 709 (Wayne petrol pump); should have been 049x and 047b respectively.

477

According to me, the Nedlloyd semi is not White Metal, but Lion Car No. 4

If you have any further questions don’t hesitate to drop me a note. Meanwhile I hope you’ll find something that might be a welcome addition to your collection.

Regards,

Christiaan Boland
