Oooh that is really nice.

I have a small, but growing, collection of the grey trade packs - I will show some when I get the time.

Jan, like me, has a love affair with the 255 Mersey Tunnel Police Land Rover, he will be looking at your middle shelf with interest.

Oh Adrian, and everyone else who has posted images of their displays, greetings!

Here are three images of my "display", comfortable ensconced on the carpet in our family room, taken while I had the place to myself, and then back into their boxes they went after the photography session had been completed before the family returned!!

These were taken on 6 July 2007, so add a further 494 to the collection since then! I will need a bigger floor space to photograph them now!!

Yes, I am envious when I see Jan, Adrian's and others displays shown with pride throughout this Thread. However, one thing is for sure, my collection is not as comprehensive and detailed as others, especially Adrian's admirable display. Still, one thing I do have, and yet to be photographed in its entirety (missing from the above images) are my Dinky Toys from my younger days, all 80 plus of them, mostly with their original boxes. This will have to wait for another day.

Kind regards

Wonderful displays, of both of you. I wonder what you are still looking for ... soo many and various Dinky Toys!
Perhaps you should ask higher parking fees in order to reduce parking densities.:)
So, Bruce, I understand this is a very rare moment that you can view the collection or a mojor part of it, or do you take them more often in and out of the boxes like this?
If not, I admire your disciplin not desiring to see them most of the time, and just know that they are there.
Kind regards, Jan

What a wonderful display Adrian!
You've done a great job there, such lovely boxes too!

PS,
The Morestone / Budgie / Zebra AA bike combo is one of my all time favourites, no shame there mate

Bruce,

Whahhhhh.

On one of your pictures, I have spoted two cars, the Auto-Pilen 1542 Chrysler Simca 1308 GT. These seem to be very rare. My question is : are these two different, what is the variation except from a slightly different green ?

Jacques.

You are indeed quite correct in that one is a slightly lighter shade of green than the other which is the only difference, but that also depends on the lighting conditions. I will dig them out and check to see if there are any other noticeable differences.

Bruce,

While you have them out, could you please make some photos 3/4 front and rear ? I have the other Pilen models but not this one. When they were issued, Dinky Toys had vanished from the toy shops for about a year already and there was no information that Dinky Toys were back on the market. Unfortunately for six models only.

Jacques,
Which six models do you refer to? I have got these:

In the past few days I have been able to make some progress with the working out of my initial try-out model for the NAMAC exhibition, as shown in this thread before. It is one of the four stages on which my Dinky models will be displayed next July.

The other three will have this basic design:

Richard---Well, you are certainly getting the most out of your display space! My shelves are also very crowded, and I have already added in all the extra shelves there is room for.

That was a very rare moment when I had the house to myself. Now that my wife has retired, and unless I can send her away on a girls only holiday, I doubt if i will be able to get them all out again. Especially now that I have added to the collection and will need a bigger floor area.

As for taking any of my Dinky Toys out of their boxes, I do that frequently, and The Chosen Ones have pride of place on my computer desk. Right now, I have the Terex with red hubs, the Cerise and Red 182 Porshe 356A coupes, and my 642 with RAF insignia. Oh, almost forgot, my 187 Karmann Ghia is here also. These replaced the 417 in yellow and green, 25X in grey and blue, and two 193 Ramblers. Some time ago, I had six on the desk, all of which were originally owned by HRH The Duke of Gloucester, purchased through Romsey Auction Rooms and arrived in their new home on 2 June 1995 - oh, that was 20 years and 4 days ago!

Here is part of my Royal Collection! (Two are on Official Business at present and will be photographed and added! The box for the 131 was purchased elsewhere, as The Duke only maintained models without their boxes. I wish now I had bought more of them!

Kind regards

Thanks, Bruce, for the explanation. Do not you observe any wear after having opened and closed the boxes many times this way? There are so many boxes around that show wear of repeatedly opening and closing them again. This happens so often with dealers on swap meets. Every time they open the boxes when putting items on the tables on arrival, and pack them again in their boxes when the fair is over. And this goes on and on with visible deterioration. This is the way flaps get 'fatigued' very soon and are detached in he end. But I have reason to believe that on the contrary you are very, very careful with handling the boxes.
I have virtually all models on display. This may not be the maximum preservation condition for the models (and some boxes), but this is partly compensated by the fact that I (virtually) never touch my Dinky's with my bare hands AND the boxes are never used (opened and closed) again after acquisition. If the insides have special characteristics or stamps I have described them in my catalogue and/or I photographed them mostly.
For the occasional display of a few favourite models you refer to I created my dust free 'drawing room display' recently, as demonstrated in this thread some months ago. These incidental exhibits last for about one month.(You may think I'm nuts - and probably I am - but this is the way of combined preservation and display for both models and boxes that suits and satisfies me best).
Kind regards, Jan

Thanks for your comments. I just open and close them until the flaps drop off and then I stick them back together with masking or packaging tape! Although there are times when I rip them off first to save them wearing out and dropping off!!

When a model is brought out and sits on my desk, the box is not closed but resides in a special vermin-proof container, and then when the model goes back into its box, it is carefully cleaned using a small industrial vacuum cleaner and fine-haired brush which also removes the dust that has adhered to the model over the past 40+ years and then a light wipe with a chamois. Basically I do not handle them with gloves (except only two models that were acquired from their original owners who never played with them so they are factory fresh), and I do admire those who treat these wonderful objects like museum accessioned items. I have had 10 years museum experience, so I treat both the models and boxes extremely carefully. The end-flaps are opened with a special tool so that the edge of the flap is not distorted any more than when it was handled by its first, youthful owner.

By the way, models are not brought out and put back on a regular basis. In fact, of the four that sit here at present, three of which have their boxes, these are the first boxed models on my desk for maybe a year. Usually it is an unboxed model that resides here. For most of the time, my collection sits in their little boxes in a vermin-proof plastic container. When I was a dealer, all my boxed models were treated very carefully. The model was wrapped in bubble-wrap and the box filled with Styrofoam cut to size, thus allowing the model to sit on top of its box on my sales table without causing the box to become distorted over time from the weight of the model. Both the model and its box were stored separately, and you are quite right about dealers who bring out their stock and remove the models from their boxes for display on a constant basis. Even those who leave them in their boxes subject them to unnecessary wear when the box is opened each time a prospective buyer wants to look at the model inside. (And usually walks off without buying it!)

It would be nice to have them all out and on display, that is for sure, and I do envy those who have done so. However, there will come a time in the very near future when I have to seriously look at us downsizing our home. My large collection gathered since 1993 must make way unfortunately when that happens, but not my 80+ from my youth. These will stay in our family and hopefully be passed down to my grandson, who already has a boxed Euclid that he leaves here, and when he gets it out he only looks at it before it goes back into its box! Not bad for a 3 year old huh!!

But I do have a confession - I do have one small display case that I bought from Sheriffs' Model Cars when they closed their second store in Parramatta, Sydney about 20 years ago. It was once in our bedroom for a number of years. (One last look before switching off the light!! B) )

The above image was taken in June 2006, so one can still see most of my "special" collection that I had at that time. The second shelf from the bottom contains some of my play-worn models from my youth with several others on different shelves. These days, the display case is in my study and contains far less Dinky Toys. I do have a large range of Mitsubishi Galant GTO models from different manufacturers and scales.

But one thing I noticed in your response, was no comment on my Royal Collection!

Thanks for your witty and elaborate anwer, Bruce.
It was the 'box matter', that struck me most, I would not know what to comment on the 'Royal Collection' - they are just nice and the provenance is remarkable. Kind regards, Jan

A more than 'just basic' working out of one of the elements in my Namac anniversary exhibition share. A lot remains to be done though ...

Nice opportunity for some DTCA advertising!
I found a nice quiet and safe corner in the house for this try-out, but light conditions for the photo and perspective available are not that favourable.

During the Autumn of last year, I was searching for something in the Meccano Magazine when I came across the following article in the September 1959 issue:

It fired my imagination and I decided that a good project for the winter months would be to recreate the display, if that were possible.

There were one or two stumbling blocks but I have now built my own version of this display, as shown below:

As can be seen I have added some scenery to make it more interesting and I will be showing it at the DTCA AGM in Derby in July this year.

It works really well and looks very good, I hope to show it at a number of other relevant venues in the coming months.

I have never seen another one of these displays working and would welcome any news of any other similar displays.

That appeared to turn out very nice, and a great combined use of Dinky Toys and Meccano. The article mentioned drilling holes in the baseplate, to engage the pins.......did you have to do that, or did you find another way to drive the models?

This was the basic Meccano framework complete and awaiting the fitting of the road bed.

The above shows it fitted with a drive belt of leather as recommended in the Meccano Magazine description - these are commonly used on sewing machines.

Once I had the road bed and the drive pins fitted in the drive belt, then came the fun. I just could not get it to function correctly, it constantly kept slipping of at the corners.

The leather belts available were either 4mm or 6mm in diameter. The 6mm was too big and kept slipping off and the 4mm was just too small. After further digging around on e-bay I found a belt made from a modern green synthetic material which was 5mm in diameter and it is perfect.

I did have to drill small holes in the baseplates but these were unboxed items that I had purchased at a fairly reasonable cost.

This is supposed to replicate a Dinky dealer shop window display so I did not want playworn vehicles going round.

I cannot get over how talented you are in re-creating this piece of engineering wizardry! You are indeed a True Dinky Artiste!

Now, I am wondering if you or anyone else such as Jan can re-create any of the following dioramas that were prepared by Mr Toyman?

These dioramas appeared in the Meccano Magazine between August to October 1953.

Your task has been set, and you have . . . . .hours/days/weeks to complete them!

Kind regards from one who cannot drive a nail straight

Hi Bruce, you bet I love making such dioramas! But I need some Bayko sets for that and some extra Pavement Sets and ... a little extra time and space.

Today many NAMAC colleagues and myself have been busy for hours building the big 50th anniversary exhibition in The Hague. Two wonderful huge halls filled with 112 stylish displays and numerous miniature cars. Tomorrow the work will be finished and the exhibition will open next Tuesday.

I will report on this and other 'Dutch Dinky affairs' one week from now at the DTCA dinner in Derby.

Just finished a complete refit of my 'ceiling displays'. Both the interior finish and the lockings have been improved and the construction of the whole unit has been fixed more sturdily. They are virtually 100% dust free now. A nice opportunity for some reshuffelling, placing i.a. the Fire Engine sub-collection in the centre. Kind regards, Jan

PS: I did not compensate for the artificial light, so the colours of the pictures below are horrible!
