--29c Double Decker Bus (AEC, 1949-1953)

Hi Gents,
Quick question, the Type 2 AEC 29 Double Decker commonly came in red / cream and green / cream without adverts, and occasionally the same colours with Dunlop adverts with the upright lettering. My question is : I have never seen this casting with the sloping Dunlop lettering as fitted to some Type 3 Leyland versions, were any of these made?
Cheers,
Chris Warr.

Hi Chris

The DTCA has a committee member who is an expert on the Dinky Buses. Sadly he, like all the other DTCA committee members, hardly ever uses the website. Because of this I have sent him an e-mail asking your question, I will post his reply as soon as I have received it.

Cheers

Dave

Hi Chris

As well as the DTCA Committee member I asked another Dinky bus expert Roger Bailey the same question and here is his reply:

Hi Dave,

An interesting question! I have never seen an example with sloping adverts either, never thought about it before! That is not to say they were never made, just that I have never found one myself. We know the same casting appeared in Exide livery, but they are not common and are not often seen.

Hope that helps.
Roger

I hope this helps.

This isn't the best picture, but for reference sake, here is the Dunlop livery as normally seen.

Hear is the answer from Brian Hooper our bus expert on the DTCA committee:

Dear David

In answer to Chris Warr's question, the AEC Type 2 casting which we sometimes call the AEC/Regent II first appeared in 1949 and lasted until 1953. All of these models were in the colours Chris mentioned but none had Dunlop adverts. To the best of my knowledge upright Dunlop adverts first appeared on the Leyland Titan casting in 1954. The AEC Regent II was reintroduced in 1957 and made for two years. As far as I am aware it only had upright adverts. The sloping adverts appeared on the Leyland Titan from about 1960 onwards until the end of the run in 1962/3. Having said this, one is always surprised at models that turn up!

For Chris's interest the later AEC/Regent II was supplied without a roof box with "290" instead of "29c" stamped on the underside. The very latest Regent had what we call distinctive nipples in place of previous pock marks on the interior ceiling.

Hope this is of help.

Best regards Brian

I hope this helps, best regards, Dave

Hi Dave / Everyone,
Wonderful! Thank you that answers my question perfectly, I shall leave these on my wants list but mark them very unlikely.
Cheers,
Chris Warr.

Am I correct in reading Roger's comments in stating there is an AEC version of the Exide bus? That sounds an interesting variation, which I don't recall ever seeing before. Does anyone have a picture?

I have received the following from Roger Bailey:

Thanks Dave,

A valid point regarding the adverts on the AEC. But strange combinations continue to turn up so i would never dismiss the possiblity of one with sloping adverts.

Yes there is an AEC in Exide livery, have seen the odd one here and there. Just like there is the BOAC Coach with spun wheels. Who knows what else is out there!

Kind regards Roger

Dave

Hi Gents,

Thanks for this, I too wondered about Roger's comment on the red Exide AEC, and I think it will have to remain in the first reserves on my wants list as I don't much rate my chances of finding one (or a spun hubs BOAC either!)

That is what makes Dinky collecting so facinating for me though, you really do never know what will turn up.

Chris Warr.
