Bandwidth issue

Jacques or ?
I tried accessing the site several times last night, and could not log in. There was a message displayed that the site was unaccessible due to the bandwidth being exceeded. I have seen this before, but usually not for an extended time; this time it lasted for at least several hours.
What causes this, and is this being addressed to solve the problem? I access several other similar blog sites, and have never encountered this before.
Regards,
Terry

I can confirm what you have written above. This is what came up on trying to log into the DTCA website for most of the evening:

Bandwidth Limit Exceeded
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit. Please try again later.

This has happened countless times in the past for me, which becomes very frustrating. I hope the new site will not suffer from the same malady.

Kind regards

Is there any way for you to inquire as to what the problem is? Not sure it needs to be kept a secret, since it interfers with the members being able to use it. A simple explanation would be nice!

Who actually looks after the effective operation of the website? Is this Dave K, who lives in North America? I notice the time used is that of CT, Central Time which is applicable to the United States. There is very little information on the backroom chaps whom we depend. (Of course their efforts are silently appreciated by all as without them, there would be no dtcawebsite.org, so many thanks!)

As Terry has mentioned, it would be most appreciated by the membership (at least those who actually open the DTCA website!) if something could be posted on the site after an incident like yesterday (and the countless other times) that provides an explanation as to what is going on.

Kind regards

The bandwidth issue was created by me (mostly) in creating the new DTCA website.
What it means is that there is an allotted amount of data that can be moved and I was moving a large amount of data from this website to the new website.
I have asked the service provider to give us more as there is a large amount of data still to be moved.

My apologies for any inconvenience you have suffered but please bear with us until the new website has most of the information moved to it.
Normally this outage lasts only a few minutes but the service provider was away and did not read my email to him for almost a day.

Hi Guys

I know this is frustrating but it is a function of the the old website which now is getting very old.

What Dave, Jan, John and I are producing is a brand new website and not the old one revamped a bit. This is taking literally hundreds of hours to put together, and it's all totally voluntary.

The new website is now getting near and will be launched soon.

Please bear with us we truly are doing our utmost to get it done as soon as possible.

Dave, Jan & others
I know that I speak for all of us DTCA members who frequent the website and enjoy using it. Thank you very much for clarifying fhe progress you folks are making and the side effect of having the site down or unaccessible at times.
I think our only frustration was not knowing, only that the site wasn't working. We certainly appreciate all the time and effort you folks are pouring into it, and look forward to seeing the results. Please do not take these previous queries personally; they were borne out of not knowing or understanding the situation.
In the future, perhaps a brief note posted to the site explaining that outages may occur, would head off comcerns by those not involved.
Thanks again!
Regards,
Terry

Greetings Dave K, Dave B, Jan and Terry

I was very pleased to finally receive some news on the progress of the new website as well as an explanation for all these outages, as I have raised this matter in the past. We all owe Dave x 2 a hearty well-done and sincere thanks as I am sure the updated website will be well-received by The Tribe!

One thing if I may suggest. Can a message be posted on this Thread, advising when work to move data from the old to the new is to be carried out, if this is at all possible. This will prevent unexpected loss of data by someone entering material into the original website. It will also alleviate the problem of not knowing when the website will come back on line.

As one who post a heckuva lot of stuff on this website (and apparently some of it is neither read or commented on!!) when the website goes down through "Band width issues", this has caused me twice to lose material that I was in the process of submitting. (I presume Dave K your work is conducted late at night to cause the least inconvenience, however, late at night in one location is a different time in another time zone!! It was either the 131 Cadillac Thread or some other that I had written at great length, and then when I tried to attach an image, the site went down. At first I thought I had done something terribly wrong! However, I waited for the website to come back on line, and when it did, I found to my consternation that I had lost everything I had written! Calling it frustrating would be an understatement. Then when I re-wrote it, I felt I had missed some of the essence of the original story. I learned a valuable lesson - type the Post onto Word or as an email draft and save it before even attempting to enter it onto the website, although it took a second loss of typed material for the brain to click in to do this.

Just a thought, as I am sure similar things have happened to others.

Finally, is there anyway whereby a periodic up-date can also be given on the progress of the new website? This would save asking Dave B how things were progressing as I am sure many members would like to show their appreciation for the work you all have and continue to do so on our behalf.

Kind regards

My above post was written on 27 June, and over the past four days, there has been no response from any of those handling the issue of the new website which is presumed to be the cause of the site going down. I did suggest that if at all possible, advance notification would be nice on this Thread.

Obviously I was asking the impossible as there has just been a "Bandwidth Limit " issue, which started about seven hours ago, not long after I had commenced a new Thread and has just come back on-line. Fortunately I had not written much before the website went down, so thank you very much for your kind considerations.

I probably should not be saying this as I am just one of the minions. This site, the old one, has been hit by hackers - this is a major cause of the 'bandwidth issues'.

David Kaun has captured all of the information so nothing will be lost. At some point in the near future this site will be shut down and all users will be invited onto the new site which is now at an advanced stage.

Nothing that is being done at the moment is easy but a huge amount of effort is going on behind the scenes.

As I said a couple of days ago please bear with us everyone is doing their best.

Dave--
Thanks for the brief update..........again, for those of us not involved, we know nothing, so any new information on the status or progress would sure be nice. Sitting back and not knowing is not easy, and as Bruce says, frustrating when long posts are "lost"....
Kudos again to all of you whom are working behind the scenes to make this a better site. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing just how it will be changed and how much better it will be.
I am sure all the hard work will payoff, and I want to thank all of you in advance!

Terry

And of course the new and previously unknown news that the old site has been hit by hackers is as Dave said, a major issue and one that all should be concerned, although what Dave wrote could be interpreted as the Bandwidth Issue is only related to hackers and not so much as work-related with the new site as previously advised.

But thanks Dave for letting us know of the current situation. (I presume regular updates can be added to this site?)
