Due to the current ongoing situation, the June 2020 DTCA AGM, did not take place.  We will try to reschedule for later in the year once matters are clearer.

Production of the DTCA special edition Omnisport model has also been postponed.

-936 Leyland 8-Wheel(ed) Chassis (1964-69)

Photo by courtesy of Theo Vereecken

The cab of some of the Leyland chassis are marked "B". Are there any marked "A" ?

boumpa (not verified)

I can not help, as the A or B is hidden under the silver chassis

Ronald,

If you look carefully with the right light, you can see the top of the letter.

All the best.

Jacques.

Here is one with an 'A' on the driver's platform casting:

If you are looking for a variation on the model, then the late issues only had one drive shaft and it was moulded in black.

Hello Jacques,
It is a 'B', and has 2 drive shafts

Sorry I can't help, I still need this one.

However as a regular traveller on the new M6 in the late 60's / early 70's I well remember seeing these travelling in convoy from Leyland, to be honest they were rear engined Atlantean bus chassis' but very close, the poor drivers had a flat cap and a scarf to keep the rain / snow off and a lap strap to keep them in!

Thank you Ron, Ronald and Chris for your helpful answers and additional information.

So we have :
1) two red prop shafts, cab A or B.
2) two black prop shafts, cab A or B.
2) one black prop shaft, cab A or B.

There may be one more variation ?

There is a small raised area under the chassis. Was this the location of the reference number on the early 1964 - 1965 models ?

Jacques
Mine has
2 black prop shafts, cab 'B'
Nothing indicated on the raised area

Ronald,

Thank you, yours is a variation two and if there is a ref. number on the raised area, it can only be on the type one with red prop shafts.

It is possible that there was a ref. number engraved in the die and that it was deleted before production started. This happened with the pressure refueller which has been marked DINKY TOYS but this was changed to DINKY SUPERTOYS before production of the initial batch started.

Jacques.

Hello Jacques

I tried to post a reply many days ago but the Internet here in the Philippines is sooooo slowww, that my message was not posted before my connection was lost!!

I will check my example when (if??) I return to Australia in May.

Cheers

Mine has B under the plastic front, two red drive shafts, and a rectangular raised area where you have indicated. Also, not discussed previously, two weights have the letter B inside and one has the letter A.

This may be of some assistance with your research, but the box has a price of 14/11 on it, which was applicable from the introduction date of September 1964 to September 1966.(In October 1966 the price increased to 15/2.)

Kind regards

Bruce or eagle eye,

Thank you for mentioning the weights, I had not spoted that. This shows that we do not look at our Dinky properly. Mine has two As and one B so it must be better than yours. :P

I also paid 14/11d. for this model as shown on my box.

Yes, you are better then I, but my two Bs are about my usual school examination passes, with never an A so I am happy!

A fascinating model this is. Cecil Gibson said: ‘… A much more courageous issue in September [1964] was a Leyland 8-wheel chassis, representing something seen on the road but never modelled. The bare chassis carried a half cab and driver, and three ballast weights. The prop-shaft rotated when the vehicle moved …’. Like so many models of this era it contains a lot of plastic, which was slowly replacing many former diecast parts.

The model shown here is a recent addition of mine, and I must confess that my admiration for this miniature has grown, having inspected all these moving parts and details. I believe that some detailed pictures can replace a lot of words, so below you can see some of the pictures I made today. My example bears the ‘B’ below the red front, and the weights show an ‘A’ (twice) and a ‘B’ once. For you to study the pictures. Kind regards, Jan

Regarding the raised pad under the chassis, presumed to be for a catalogue number - could it be that this was deleted when it was decided to use the same chassis casting for 925, the Leyland Tipper Truck?
