John,
Thank you for the link, I checked this list, it is about the same as mine.
I also made a list with the different types of boxes, here is a sample of this list.
Dear Al,
Yes the title of the thread has gone, like on most of other forums this title should be at the top of EACH post. Also the "joined" date should not be here but on the profile page and the date of the post should be in larger letters, this is the important date.
I always thought that the "New arrivals" thread is not necessary, it has become a junk thread. New arrivals should be posted in their respective threads where they can be found again. For example Jan W's great pictures about the packaging of the mobile crane will be lost in a few weeks. If it had been posted in the 571 / 971 thread this very interesting piece of information could be found easily. This is only an example and it applies to most posts of the "New arrivals thread".
I will answer Johnny's post #1395 in a proper thread later today.
Kind regards
Jacques
Hello Jacques, You're right that the topic title should appear on every page. I suspect an update has reveresed my modification which was doing just that, so I'm prioritising to fix it. This is fixed. I'll take onboard what you're saying about the joined date because I think that sounds right too. Joined date has been removed from topic and comment headers.
New Arrivals has evolved into a general discussion thread that will naturally gravitate from one subject to another. I don't view New Arrivals as junk though. Using the website purely as an information directory, yes, it would be useful to have every mention of anything in particular grouped into one area. But the website has a broader than utilitarian function because it is also a social space for the club - which might be just as important.
Hi Jacques, in my opinion we should consider this thread also as a kind of 'current affairs' thread, dealing with new acquisitions but also with some liberty regarding inevitable minor intermediate chat. Indeed, for more detailed information about a model or topic that information must/should be (double) posted in the correct dedicated topic thread - which, by the way, I did already for the Mobile Crane box interiors.
I think we must be very happy with Al's actions for improving the forum. For us, contributors, it's the task to keep disciplined in posting information in the correct categories/topics threads, and that we operate accurately when introducing and formulating new topics. Kind regards, Jan
Not sure what you are getting at here, are we not allowed to chat on this forum, thought that was the whole idea. You do not need specific headings you need general catagories, for example prewar items, pre & post renumbering. I not how do you expect to navagate.
The question about which trade box list, took me a while to find it again, PUBLICATIONS at the top, then BOXES & INSERTS,
Then select the 1st item, Box numbers for trade boxes & set boxes, then press view, then press, dinky box numbers PDF. What comes up is an extensive list of all the trade boxes with reference numbers, very good.
I must say a little challanging for me to find the information again. A libary of information would be good, has anybody been on the site nzmeccano, its a brilliant site, everything there is to know about Meccano, and it does contain all the Meccano mags with all the adverts for reference. Pictures of just about everything from individual peices to retails cabinetes. I think there is probably a picture of every set ever produced.
Where can we add a pictures of every model, bo or display, never mind that question just found the gallery. Some nice pictures of some really desirable examples that have not seen, prewar irflow trade box for example.
The libary of information is second to none and relatively easy to follow.
My key board has gone astray, trying to say 'I do not know you expect to navigate' with out general headings leading to sub-headings. Members also do need to be able to add topics at will to add to the ease of discussion, am I wrong in this view.
David
Dear DavidT
If you know any tradeboxes which are not in the list, please let me know. I hold lists of the A and 50000 boxes as well as a chart showing the different types of tradeboxes for each model.
Jacques
One of the great things about computers is that they search out the topics you want you would not need individual headings for each item. All you need to do is to place in the tittle the number the computer would do the rest or even just have a box that refers to a number. Am sure that would be less complicated and much easrier to find and follow.
Am I wrong?
Also were do you have the general discussion about whatever?
With regard to the pictures refered to above, should they not be in a general libary appropiately catagorised?
DavidT
I presume many of you watch and follow Vectis auctions, if you do, I was sucessfull in bidding on a number of items in their Auction on the 1th July 2020. Only about half that I left bids on.
Looking forward to seeing the items.
DavidT
on the 17th July.

Here's a list of pre and post war trade boxes with their code numbers
http://dtcawebsite.com/sites/default/files/dtca-journal-pdfs/Dinky_box_numbers.pdf
Yes, that is the list I found on this site and its brilliant. The information is now my check list. I have transferred the information to excel spreadsheet and can now add to the information as I desire.
Am curious as to how this information was accumulated, was it through auctions over the years or collectors over the years or was it some sort of official document?
Who ever did it thank you, it answered many of my questions.
DavidT
One of the questions that I am trying establish to answer to, is order in which the different coloured boxes appeared and was there some logic to the different coloured boxes use, ie export?
There are the yellow boxes, Salmon coloured, beige, and the blue that the planes and some gift boxes came in. Some have the code date but only seems to commence in 1938.
Some of the gift sets I have the boxes to have the mottled type paper but some have a different finish.
DavidT
That list was compiled by John Beugels and myself over about ten years. Either pictures of examples would show up at auction or they were discovered in collections. Not many unknown trades have turned up recently but I need to update the info probably. I think the last one was the prewar 25h Fire Engine A2107.
Dinky trade boxes went through an evolution from when they were Modelled Miniatures - trackside Hornby Series train accessories (that's what the A stands for in the code). So we can see that a trade box for 22a Sports Coupe is the immediate ancestor of boxes like 23 Racing Car.
In 1935 such decadence abruptly finished with the arrival plain orange boxes, printed only on one edge but continuing with the checker border design. Soon the address was added to one long edge, then the colour returned to yellow. In 1938 trades became a shoebox with thin lids printed on every edge - one of the long sides would include a batch production number and date code under the address and we have list of those somewhere too.
Austerity finally set in for the prewar trades as they became rather alike with the immediate post war brown boxes with a yellow label.

There are different types of boxes, the blue aircraft boxes are not tradeboxes, the gift sets are not tradeboxes either. Tradeboxes are only those containing 3, 6 or 12 identical models in the same or different colours.
I have found 15 different types of tradeboxes (not including the French ones) as shown in my post # 1412 above. The list was compiled mainly from the Dinky Toys Encyclopædia but also from various web sites : TMT, DTCA, ebay, Vectis, QDT etc... , also from many collectors whom I thank and books. There is no official list of tradeboxes from Meccano Ltd.
The Dinky Toys aircraft may have been run by a different department at Binns Road, their boxes are different from those of the land & sea vehicles, they are almost the only ones to have the date and quantity reference.
Jonathan
Very nice and in very good condition too. I can now see why adding to your collection shouldn’t be a problem!
Best regards,
Terry
That's really a great find, the Belgian Touring Secours / Touring Wegenhulp version of the AA Motor Cycle Patrol!
Richard—-Very nice! Even though I don’t actively collect any longer, I still am trying to find a few elusive models to complete some areas of my collection. In the French Ford 25 series the only version of the bache I am missing is the first and plain one, without any livery, such as you are showing. These don’t come up very often at all. If you happen to see any others available I would appreciate you letting me know, if possible. I really love the whole series of Ford trucks, and that one would complete my collection.
Jonathan—Very nice.....the yellow version happens to be one of my favorites. Which other(s) do you already have? My red one dates to around 1956 & has always been a great model. Dinky did a particularly nice job with the casting on this one....very true to scale!
Best regards,
Terry
Wow.....nice collection of Jags! Do you now have all varieties? I am not that aware of all variations......
Terry
Two similar but different pictures, the one on top taken thirteen years ago, the one on the bottom taken today.
The difference is the orange type 4 example in the middle. It arrived yesterday as an 'as new' replacement of my previous example, a heavily play-worn Market Gardener's Wagon, which I bought on a flee market in Amsterdam almost four decades ago and restored it afterwards. Kind regards, Jan
Included too was a very special no. 161b AA Gun on Trailer, my fifth variation, making them complete in my opinion.
It's the first, early post-war edition, and, with its very unusual original white treaded tyres, possibly even belonging to a first batch to be sent to the USA, like similar examples of the no. 152b Reconnaisance Car.
To be posted more accurately in the 161b topic thread. Kind regards, Jan
Jan—That specimen looks close to being mint from that none-to-close photo....superb for sure! And those very special finely treaded tires really set it off; I immediately thought of your similar vintage Reconnaissance Car.....what a pair they will make....be sure and show them together!
Best regards, Terry
What a nce AA Gun, Jan!
Meantime until and unless I come across another original Dinky display I can't resist, I am well and truly out of space for any more Dinky Toys. So what to do for some final acquisitions?
Well, I got a gift set that can display itself, plus another item that can be placed on top of an existing vehicle. (The Nicky Toys version of the Antar transporter was never supplied with the transformer ... )
