Message from new member Bas van Beek

dear fellow members, please allow me to introduce myself; my name is Bas van Beek, and I just joined the association. I am very proud to join this group of Dinky specialists. For my own protection (and my wife and kid's!) I collect only Dinkys race/racing from the 23 series and the later 200 follow up series. As you can see, I have a special focus on  the Dink Auto Union. I love them as a group, I love them single and I am so impressed of the quality, given what these toys went through over all these years...I never bumped into a box..maybe fellow members can sare some insights on this. I also have three gift sets where the Auto Union is included.

Thank you again for having me as a member. I expect this will be very inspiritional for my further collections. Stay safe, Bas

Welcome to the Forum, Bas.

Never seen so many Dinky Auto Unions and related racing cars together. Impressive!

Looking forward to many more contributions of yours! Kind regards, Jan

Hello Bas!

Welcome from another collector who has a soft spot for Dinky racers. I don't have anywhere near the number you have though. As Jan W says, yours is an impressive collection!

I look forward to learning more about your favourites.

Here are my favorite 23 series racers. Some have been repainted well, some badly, some have been prepared for painting. Some have original tyres, some incorrect or replacement tyres, most are well played-with and not very valuable. One or two are quite desirable, and one is not even a Dinky!

The centre group are all pre-war examples including my pride and joy the 1934 cream and green example, without driver, in lead. The non-Dinky is of course the Johillco version in green, complete with base plate. A rare survivor.

Hi Bas, is the orange 23a - next to the red one in the foreground - a true colour, or might it be a severely sunfaded red one? I don't know of an orange post-war 23a. By the way, you might consider to post some of these pictures in the various 23 topic threads. Kind regards, Jan

Hello Jan.

Your post about the orange example prompted me to have a much closer look at it with a magnifying glass, and to make a comparison with the red example next to it in the photo.

If it was repainted, and I'm not sure that it was, it must have been done a long time ago and very accurately in terms of reproducing the colour scheme of the original. Also, the model would have to have been stripped to bare metal as there is no sign that I can see of any paint under the orange. The silver paint is definitely on top of the orange paint, and the orange does not appear to be a faded red although it may be. There is also the faint remains of a number panel on each side in the correct position. The accumulated dirt in the underside crevices is also very old and the tyres are showing the usual signs of age. All that said, the paint is quite matt compared to the red example and does appear to have a thicker application. There is also a craquelure in some areas. Is this seen on other examples?

I think I should bring it to the AGM (whenever that may be! This year, next year?) for you to have a look. It didn't occur to me that it wasn't an original colour. I always thought it was a faded red.

Apologies for posting the photos in this thread - I wasn't thinking!

Kind regards to all in this worrying time.

John

P.S. Bas, please call me John! :-)

Thanks Bas and John, for your explanations. An exciting colour version, this orange one, and Bas' 23 collection is overwhelming. I have just created a British Cars > 23 Series (General) topic, in which some of your exciting photos and remarks may have a useful and traceable place: http://dtcawebsite.com/forum-topic/23-series-general

Kind regards, Jan
