Hello all,
I very much like wheel variations. Over the years I have collected many, like the Bedford Tippers with red wheels shown
elsewhere in the Forum. Just for the fun of sharing I have included a picture with two rare wheel variations. If you have a uncommon wheel variation, please share it also. I plan to post some other pictures soon.
Rob van der Hoort
Hi Rob
Welcome to the forum there are a number of very keen Dinky collectors on here and it is great to see a new face.
I love the Triumph and the Porsche you have hear and look forward to seeing more of your examples.
Dave
Thank you Dave! The Massey Ferguson with green wheels is next. I assume the wheels of the last version of the Field Marshall Tractor have been used on
this model. I have seen one other like this. The box is a bit tired, but the model never left the box. Note the wording "Tractor 300" on the box.
Rob
One more to enjoy hopefully: 965 Euclid Dump Truck with green wheels.
Unusual and very nice!
Rob
Hi Rob,
Thank you so much for these pictures, such lovely condition too! The 40b is amazing with red hubs!
Chris Warr.
Welcome Rob, nice to see a new fellow-countryman here! Very special examples you show, congratulations with such finds!
I am a kind of variations collector too, but not deliberately or exclusively. Nevertheless, among my Farm Produce Wagon variants I have one with yellow body, green cab/chassis and the same green hubs. Perhaps not ultra-rare, but less familiar than the other examples. A look at the images in Google doesn't show a copy. I have seen only one making part of the no. 5 Gift Set no. 2 (together with the Bedford Tipper, Austin Covered Wagon, Esso Studebaker Tanker and Land-Rover).
Now I wonder, do you (or someone else of course) know more about settings in which this model does show up? (Sold in trade box, individual box, Gift Set, illustration?). The chassis information is the same as for other regular 1950s Dodges, it has the early louvres at the bonnet's sides and smooth tyres.
I look forward to your comments!
Best regards, Jan
(by the way, I changed my avatar, perhaps it's nice to see some faces from enthusiasts here, like yours)
The 965 Euclid, the 666 Corporal Missile Erector, the 693 7.2" Howitzer and the 437 Muir-Hill Loader all used the same type of wheels.
I am assuming that your Euclid has been fitted with Military Green wheels, presumably because they had run out of Yellow ones.
I think it is fun to find these interesting, and rare, variations.
Dave
This is where Dinky got the idea of green wheels from.
This full-size Euclid lives about 15 miles from my house.
Dave
Hi Jan,
Thanks for your comment and the pictures. The 30N with green cab and
green wheels is rare. I have seen it one or two times before, but it
is missing from my collection. As it is with bonnet louvres it has to
be produced between 1950 and 1954 when the model was renumbered 343 and
the bonnet louvres where removed from the mold.
This means it can come from a trade box, from Gift Set 2 Commercial
Vehicles (1952-53) or in an individual dual numbered box.
I have the Gift Set, but with a regular 30N.
Kind regards,
Rob
Hi Dave,
Nice to see a picture of the real beast Euclid! I think you are
right that the Dinky Euclid is fitted with military wheels.
Rob
Thanks Rob, in theory the time range can even be wider, 1950-1957, in my opinion (if only we knew the large design drawing for the cab/chassis unit of the Dodges, where no doubt the deletion of the louvres is documented and dated).
I agree with your three suggested options, but I am looking for (rather) firm evidence.
Below the evidence of the Gift Set appearance (if nothing has changed in the contents meanwhile). This Gift Set 2 was available 1952-1954, so these seem to be 'firm' limits of the time span, as available thus far. This Gift Set was shown and discussed by Nigel Mynheer in Model Collector of October 2004 (Vol. 18, no. 10). I have seen various other examples of Gift Set 2, often with a varying mix of colour combinations. The availability in such a gift set only might contribute to the explanation of its relative scarcity.
Kind regards, Jan
Thanks Jan,
The only thing I can add is that I have got a red/blue Farm Produce Wagon with bonnet louvres in a dual numbered individual box.
Both model and box are perfect, it seems more than likely they have been together from production.
Kind regards,
Rob
Wheel variations on 40e Standard Vanguard 1st type. All three models have the 1st baseplate with tinplate clip. The maroon hub version is one of a trade box of 6(!)similar models found by Keith Harvey.
Rob
Nice to see, so these variations demonstrated here date from pre-1950, the rear-wheel covers added in December 1949. Do they also occur on covered rear wheel versions?
If you don't mind, I tried some improvement on your picture:
Kind regards, Jan
Thanks Jan, the picture looks much better! I have never seen the covered
rear wheel version in fawn with other than fawn wheels. But perhaps they do exist. I did not know about the maroon wheel version on the picture until I could buy it.
Dinky Toys keep surprising us!!
My next post is one more of such a surprise at least to me!
Kind regards,
Rob
Hi Rob,
Thank you for more pictures, I have to keep updating my variations list!
I love the Vanguard, and have just picked up a second Maroon body / Maroon hubs version, playworn, but at a very good price so I had to have it.
At one time I had tried to put together a full set of all Post War English Dinky castings, but came to realise I now had quite a few models, particularly the later issues, that I didn't actually like!
I now concentrate on a particular series, 28 / 25 / 40 at the moment and try to get every variation I can. Much more fun!
There is no way I could do this mint / boxed, so a good playworn is fine with me as I like to look along the shelf and see how a model changed over the years.
Thanks again for the pictures.
Chris Warr.
To find a 39a Packard with colored hubs really amazed me.I have never
seen one before or after. Has anyone on this Forum seen one?
The 39c Lincoln Zephyr on the picture is more common I think and also
exists in red with red hubs.
I have never seen a 39f Studebaker with colored hubs, but they should be
out there. Has anyone?
Rob
We have it in the french version.
Here is the 24o studebaker :
Kind Regards
Richard
Thanks Richard,
Still wondering if there are English produced Studebakers with coloured
hubs out there...
Here are some 39e Chryslers. The cream with cream hubs I found the most difficult to find.
Rob
Just wanted to extend my welcome to the forum, great to see you here Rob!
May I ask, did your Packard & Lincoln (shown above) come from the same source?
Warm regards, Stfan
Thank you Stfan and yes the Packard and Lincoln came from one source in the US. As I never saw the Packard before, I took the model to the Houten toyfair to show it to some dealers and collectors. Nobody had seen one before. The model is 100% original. 39 series Packards and Studebakers with colored hubs are listed in various catalogues among the last export models made. Same with the Chryslers above. I found the two cream ones at Houten in a late yellow trade box with an US export label.
Kind regards,
Rob
I am sure I have seen these before when I was living in the states (12+ years ago
The 162 Ford Zephyr in lime green. On the right with the usual
fawn hubs, on the left with grey hubs. I found it last year on eBay not specially described. These grey hubs are fitted to the two tone blue Ford Zephyr. They must have ran out of the fawn hubs in the factory!
Rob
Hi Rob,
You did very well to spot those grey hubs, many times I've bought what I thought was a rare shade only to find it was just a poor photo instead!
Chris Warr.
The last Foden made and one of very few known (to me)wheel variations
on a Foden: The Chain Lorry with plastic hubs.
Rob
This is an other Buick with green hubs but the front one is smooth and the rear one ridged.
Rob,
This is an extremely rare 1964 Foden specially in MIB condition but I have been told that you have a star, something very small and even rarer than the Foden. Are you preparing an article about it ?
There are other variations between the mid green and lime green models: tiny rear lights and registration plate.
Surely the one shown here on the right is the version of the Zephyr supplied only with the 990 Gift Set
Dave
I might as well weigh in with a 972 with black plastic hubs.
