-111 Triumph TR2 Competition Finish (1956-59)

Later base plate without reference number 111

Bruce,

Sorry for not posting the picture of the base plate without the ref last night but please remember that on this side of the planet we are in winter and have 12 hours time difference with you.

Jacques.

Sorry Jacques, but the last time I checked, we are only nine hours ahead of where you live, so where are you right now? Three more hours would place you in mid-Atlantic! Actually, you posted your comments in the 105 Triumph TR2 Sports (touring finish) thread six hours and six minutes before I wrote my comments, so I am not sure what you are coming at apart from "having a go". Hope the cold is not causing too much discomfort.

But thanks for posting the picture of your sales numberless 111. Now we are all convinced, with the emphasis on WE.

While describing and cataloguing my new addition of the Triumph TR2 Sports in competition finish, it struck me that my example of the touring finish has a slight casting difference compared with this (early, 111 embossed in base plate) example of the competition version. It appears that a ridge has been added in front of the wind screen opening. Has this been recorded before?
I do not know the reason for this, or it might have been done in order to hide or strengthen the rather irregular cast slit for the wind screen inserted. I presume that newer castings for the competion version 111 show the added ridge as well. It would be interesting to know if this change is documented on the drawing of job no. 14051, which shows no 'significant changes' according to the GBofDT. The job no. 14052 small sheet, however, does confirm the deletion of the sales number 111 from the base plate.
Some pictures, including the review and introduction (showing the other colour issue and competition no. 25) in Meccano Magazine of February 1956.

Kind regards, Jan

Well done Jan, I had never heard about this ridge. It has been placed over a sharp angle of the die which did not fill well as indicated by the irregular edge of the windscreen slot. The ridge solves the problem.

Now the question is how many variations do we have ?
