--90a and 830 Richier rouleau compresseur [Richier Diesel Roller] (1958-1969)

A new thread for this particularly beautiful model of Meccano France: Dinky Toys 90a-830 Rouleau compresseur Richier. The counterpart of the British 25p-251 Aveling-Barford Diesel Roller.

It first appeared in Meccano Magazine France June 1958. Also in the French Dinky Toys and Meccano catalogue in 1958 as 90a. In 1959 it was renumbered to 830 till the end of production in 1969. It measures 112 mm and weighs 231 grams. The British 25p measures 110 mm and weighs 160 grams.

Kind regards,

Hi Jan, a great addition to the Dinky Toys documentation we are accumulating on the website! The pictures are very nice. Funny that you even add the weight data to the respective roller models - an omission in my registration. Remarkable that the first catalogue picture does hardly match the model as completed - something seen in several other instances for French Dinkies. Probably the prototype/ mock-up used for that was slightly different from the completed model.

The Rouleau compresseur betrays that it's a much more sophisticated model than its ten years older British brother of 1948! I like both of them. Kind regards, Jan W.

There's hardly anything to add to Jan O.'s documentation above. The only two reasons to demonstrate mine are the exceptionally nice box with internal packing piece and my uncertainty about its scale. With its model length of 173 mm and the actual length of 7720 mm the scale of its companion, the no. 886 Profileur 100 Richier, is 1/43. Is the scale for the Rouleau compresseur the same or different? Kind regards, Jan W

Jan. Unfortunately, I can not answer your question about the scale of the 90a. I am not a star in geometry. What I do see is a stunningly beautiful 90a as new. I assume that it is not an atlas edition because I know you are not a fan of these editions. By the way, I do not even know if Atlas reproduces this model. As if it comes straight from the factory. Very exceptional to find this model in such a state. A wonderful find. I have never seen such a cool model with such a cool box. A wonderful addition to your collection. Congratulations.

Kind regards, Jan O.

Thanks for taking the trouble, Jan! Continuing my search I found the quote below on the filrouge-automobile website. I don´t know on which source this 1/43 scale statement is based, but it could quite well be so. Perhaps Jacques or Richard can confirm. I did not find the scale on Jacques´ Encyclopaedia's page for this roller, but my version may be outdated. Kind regards, Jan

Dear Jan,

In this case your CD is up to date. The scale of the Richier roller is not stated because it is not known. The June 1958 Meccano Magazine page 35 states that the length of the machine is 110 mm; but the rear cover of this magazine states 115 mm. I have measured it acurately to 110 mm. It remains to find the exact length of the real roller.

The statement of Le Fil Rouge may be exact but it may not. Who knows ?

The hunt is open to find a real one and mesure it.
